Depakote (divalproex sodium) – A prescription anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizer used in treating epilepsy, bipolar disorder, migraines, and schizophrenia. The drug is known as Epival in Canada and Epilim in the UK and Australia. Depakote is linked to a large host of side effects including cognitive dysfunction, Parkinsonian syndrome, brain damage, impaired liver function, jaundice, thrombosytopenia, and placental damage in pregnant women. Several hepatitis cases have also been reported in patients taking Depakote.
Meridia (sibutramine) – A drug used in treating obesity. Meridia is related to the drug family that includes amphetamines, methamphetamines, and phentermines. Meridia is considered a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US. It is suspected of causing several deaths, heart failures, renal failures and gastrointestinal problems. The Senate heard a case to ban the drug in 2005 but the FDA has taken no additional steps to do so.
