Digitek, generically known as digitalis, is a prescription drug used in the treatment of heart conditions, such as congestive heart failure and arrhythmias. Manufactured by Actavis Totowa LLC and distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., Digitek can slow electrical impulses in the heart, thereby improving the heart's pumping action (for those with irregular heartbeats) and promoting better circulation. Depending on a patient's condition and health, Digitek can be administered via pills or injections.
While Digitek did prove effective for some, in April 2008, Actavis Totowa LLC issued a press release alerting the American public that some of its oral digitek tablets may contain two times the appropriate amount of the drug's active ingredient, digoxin or digitalis. These double-dosed versions of Digitek were also double the thickness of standard, safe forms of the medication.
While the proper levels of Digitek can reduce heart-related swelling and improve heart function, excessive amounts of this prescription drug may cause Digitek toxicity (or digitalis toxicity). Symptoms of Digitek toxicity include:
Individuals who experience any symptoms of Digitek toxicity should seek medical attention immediately.
Actavis Totowa's press release announcing the danger of double-dosage Digitek sparked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a Class I recall on the drug on April 25, 2008. Class I recalls are the most serious and urgent recall designations, reserved for the products or medications that have a high potential for causing serious injury and/or death.
Those who have suffered from Digitek toxicity, as well as family members of those who have died from Digitek toxicity, may be eligible to file a legal claim to recover losses.
The effects of Digitek toxicity can be debilitating and, in some cases, irreversible. Get the money you need to pay for vital treatments by talking with a personal injury lawyer and starting your Digitek lawsuit today. Contact out digitek lawyer to schedule a free consultation.
