Generically known as digoxin, Digitek is an injectable or oral medication that can help the heart beat stronger and more regularly. Consequently, Digitek medication is typically prescribed in the treatment of:

• atrial fibrillation, irregular heart beat ("Normal" heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute.)
• atrial flutter, a faster than normal heart beat
• congestive heart failure (only when heart failure can't be properly controlled with use of other medications).

Digitek Medication Dosage

The appropriate digitek medicine dose for a particular patient will depend on:

• the patient's condition
• the severity of his or her condition
• her or her unique medical history.

General Digitek dosing guidelines involve the following:

• Take Digitek with an 8-ounce glass of water.
• Take Digitek as close to the same time as possible every day.
• Use a special dose-measuring device if liquid Digitek medicine is being taken (Patients can get these devices from their Digitek doctors or pharmacists).
• Only use Digitek as directed, as taking excess amounts of this medication increases patient's risk of developing serious Digitek side effects.
• Do NOT stop taking a course of Digitek without first consulting your doctor.

Should patients miss a dose of Digitek, they should take the missed dose as soon as they remember – unless the next dose of Digitek is less than 12 hours away. In this event, patients should wait to take the next dose and not double-up on Digitek doses.

Alternately, Digitek overdoses are medical emergencies. Patients who take too much Digitek should seek immediate medical attention to prevent irreversible, potentially fatal health complications.

Digitek Medication Side Effects

In most cases, Digitek medication side effects are mild and easily treatable. Rarely, however, Digitek can cause some serious health problems, including:

• acute psychosis
• delirium
• depression
• hallucinations
• heart block
• seizures
• severe allergic reaction
• worsened arrhythmias.

Those with the highest risk of developing severe Digitek side effects include patients who:

• have a history of heart problems, kidney disease, thyroid disorders and/or electrolyte imbalances
• currently take high doses of Digitek medication
• may have taken the recalled double-dosed Digitek pills.

Digitek Medication Recall

In April 2008 and May 2009, Digitek tablets were recalled due to the possibility that some pills contained double doses of the medication's active ingredient, digoxin.

• Work with their doctors to find a safe, suitable alternative to recalled Digitek medicine.
