Digitek is the brand name of a digitalis-based heart medication manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Actavis. In the spring of 2008 there was a U.S. Digitek recall due to a grave mistake in the manufacturing process: some of the Digitek tablets contain twice the correct amount of the active ingredient, digoxin. This doubled level of digoxin is dangerous enough to people with healthy kidneys, and Digitek’s danger is greater still for individuals whose kidney failure won’t adequately remove the digoxin from the body.

• adverse cardiac effects (including abnormally fast or slow heartbeat)

• low blood pressure
• abdominal pain
• confusion and mental disturbances (e.g., hallucinations, anxiety, delirium, and depression)
• hemorrhagic necrosis of the intestines
• intestinal ischemia
• thrombocytopenia (low platelet count in the blood, making an increased risk of bleeding)
• visual disturbances (blurred or yellow vision)
