On May 11, 2009, A.S. Medication Solutions, LLC, announced that it is issuing a voluntary recall of Digoxin, a brand of digitalis produced by Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Ltd. A.S. Medication Solutions is a drug repackaging company that distributes Digoxin.

This nationwide recall affects 0.25mg Digoxin tablets that:

• were distributed before March 31, 2009
• have not yet expired
• have an expiration date before August 2011.

This recent Digoxin recall was announced after it was discovered that tablets of this medication may differ in size. Different sizes of Digoxin tablets can mean that there is more or less of the drug's active ingredient, digoxin, in each tablet.

What is Digoxin?

Effective at helping the heart beat stronger and more regularly, Digoxin is a medication that is typically prescribed in the treatment of arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.

Along with Digoxin, other brand names of digitalis include:

• Digitek
• Lanoxin
• Lanoxicaps.

Digoxin Side Effects

Unfortunately, Digoxin is known to cause a range of serious, life-threatening side effects, including:

• acute psychosis

• delirium
• depression
• hallucinations
• heart block
• seizures
• severe allergic reaction
• worsened arrhythmias.

Without treatment, these Digoxin side effects can be fatal.

Those with the highest risk of developing severe Digoxin side effects include individuals who have a history of:

• electrolyte imbalances
• heart problems
• kidney disease
• thyroid disorders.

Additionally, anyone who accidentally overdoses on Digoxin (due to misshapen tablets that contain an excess of the active ingredient) will also be more likely to develop serious complications after taking this medication.

The First Digoxin Recall

Tragically, this isn't the first time that digoxin has been recalled from the market. In April 2008, digoxin pills marketed under the name Digitek were recalled due to possible variability in size and strength of the pills. These recalled digoxin pills were:

• distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals (under the Bertek and UDL labels).
