Digitek side effects are generally dose-dependent, with dangerous side effects occurring at doses that are higher than those used for therapeutic reasons. The April 2008 nationwide Digitek recall was based on side effects due to a possible double-dosage of the drug’s active ingredient, present in some of the oral Digitek tablets on the U.S. market.
An individual who has taken recalled Digitek may experience the following side effects:
These are the Digitek side effects described in the voluntary recall announcement by Digitek’s manufacturer, Actavis Totowa LLC. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also listed these side effects as the reason for its April 2008 Safety Alert regarding Digitek.
However, Digitek has other side effects that may appear even with a dosage that is not mistakenly doubled (as in the recalled Digitek). These side effects include:
Every drug has potential side effects for some people, and Digitek is no different. However, Digitek is made from an ingredient that is very powerful — digitalis, a plant-derived substance that had been used for hundreds of years as a traditional medicine. Digitalis was used at one time to treat swelling (fluid build-up), and epilepsy and other seizure disorders. It is no longer used for epilepsy treatment.
Another side effect of digitalis that some patients experience is a reduced appetite. Digitek has thus been prescribed in some cases as a weight loss aid. However, this is not a valid or safe use of Digitek or similar digitalis-based medications.
Digitek side effects can be very harmful, and even fatal. If you have suffered a severe Digitek side effect, or you have lost a loved one due to a side effect of this medication, contact an experienced attorney who can inform you of your legal options. You may be entitled to compensation for your losses.
According to recent reports, Actavis Totowa, the makers of Digitek, have recalled all generic drugs manufactured at their New Jersey plant.
