Digitek, a brand name prescription produced by Actavis Totowa LLC, was widely prescribed to treat heart conditions, including arrhythmias, until the manufacturer announced in April 2008 that some pills may contain double the safe amounts of its active ingredient, digitalis or digoxin.

In safe doses, Digitek can effectively slow certain electric impulses in the heart, which, in turn, helps the heart pump blood more efficiently. However, when excessive amounts of Digitek are consumed, the drug builds up in the body and results in the potentially fatal condition known as Digitek toxicity.

Digitek Death: Symptoms of Digitek Toxicity

Unsafe, double-dosed Digitek pills are only identifiable by their slightly thicker form, since tablets containing twice the safe levels of digitalis are typically also doubled in size. Aside from this feature, the only other way for patients to identify if they are taking potentially toxic forms of Digitek is to monitor their health for symptoms of Digitek toxicity, which include:

• faintness
• hypotension (low blood pressure)
• intensified arrhythmias, particularly bradycardia (a slower than normal heartbeat)
• kidney failure
• nausea
• vomiting
• death, if Digitek toxicity persists without proper treatment

To minimize the risk of Digitek death and prevent permanent health complications, anyone taking Digitek should work closely with his doctor to find alternate treatment methods for his or her heart condition(s).

Risk of Digitek Death Prompts Recall

While patients have been reporting cases of Digitek toxicity for a few years, not until April 2008 did Actavis Totowa issue a press release about the possible dangers associated with their double-dosed Digitek pills.

Although there is no official way to determine how many double-dosed Digitek pills were released to the public, experts estimate that as many as 50 percent of all Digitek pills were double-dosed.

In response to Actavis Totowa's press release, the FDA issued a Class I recall of Digitek on April 25, 2008. A "Class I" designation indicates that Digitek is among the most dangerous medications on the market due to its high potential for causing serious injury and/or death.
