DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., has announced it is voluntarily recalling portions of its artificial hips that have been implanted in patients over the past five years. Two artificial hip cup systems are being recalled:
The implanted cups are manufactured replacements for the socket or acetabular portion of the ball and socket hip joint. The cup, which fits into the pelvis, has been loosening and a second hip surgery, called revision surgery, has been necessary.

The DePuy recalls were announced Aug. 26, 2010. ASR cups were implanted between late 2005 and 2009. The ASR XL cups were implanted from 2008-2009.
The hips are, reportedly, failing within a few years, whereas hip replacements usually are expected to last about 15 years. Some surgeons say the cup is poorly designed. DePuy has said the surgeons are not properly inserting the implant.
A variety of materials are used for making the artificial hips, but some versions use titanium or cobalt chrome. The latter, because of friction produced in the joint, is shedding particles into the blood stream. An average hip replacement system weighs between one and two pounds, depending upon the materials used.
The natural hip is a ball and socket joint. The artificial hips are made to act like this type of joint. The ball portion replaces the round head at the top of the femur, the thighbone. It is a metal ball attached to a stem that fits into the femur. The cup replaces the acetabulum, or the socket that is part of the pelvis. When the cup fails, or loosens, revision surgery is required.
When the acetabular cup is loose, patients may:
DePuy mailed notices of the recall to orthopedic surgeons, who have been notifying patients who may have received the artificial hip replacements. Patients’ records should contain the reference number of the hip parts being replaced. If you are not sure if you have a faulty hip system, contact your physician.
When revision surgery is needed, it is more complicated than the original hip replacement surgery. Problems with revision surgery include:
If you have had a hip transplant that needs replacing, you should contact a DePuy ASR hip implant lawyer to ensure you receive all the reparations you are due. DePuy has said it will pay for the costs of the revision surgery. You may also be eligible to recover compensation for your pain and suffering.
