If you are the recipient of a DePuy hip implant you should monitor yourself for symptoms, contact your surgeon for further medical advice, and consult with our DePuy implant attorneys.
The DePuy ASR™ Acetabular cup defect involves the metal-on-metal joint of the cup system. The friction from the metal-on-metal contact generates metal shavings. These metal shavings can cause damage to the surrounding tissue and other serious complications if they get into the bloodstream.
The design has proven to be defective as well. The hip implant is comprised of a ball component that fits into a cup to create movement. Doctors have found that the cup part of the hip implant is too shallow to hold the ball of the femur. The design defect has resulted in an actual loosening of the implant in some patients. When an implant becomes loose a patient might experienced bone fractures and will require surgery.
Symptoms of the DePuy Acetabular defect include severe pain, swelling and trouble walking.
The failure rate of the DePuy ASR™ Acetabular system, according to reports, is around 13 percent within 5 years of the initial surgery. A properly functioning implant is supposed to last at least 15 years. When an implant fails it requires a second surgery, known as a revision surgery, to replace the implant. Revision surgeries can be even more difficult than the original surgery due to the weakening of surrounding bone and muscle from the defective implant.
In August of 2010 DePuy initiated a recall of the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular hip system, due to the high failure rate and associated risks. When the metal debris from the metal-on-metal friction enters the bloodstream they can negatively impact several functions of the body, including the heart, kidneys, and thyroid. In February 2011, the FDA stated that there are "unique risks" from implants which have metal-on-metal joints.
