DePuy has sent notices to surgeons, informing them of the recall. Doctors are asking their patients to come to their offices for evaluations. Patients’ medical records should contain the identification number of the hip implant.
Artificial hip joints are constructed of two parts to replicate the normal joint:
Specifically, the products being recalled are the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular Cup systems. ASR is an abbreviation for Articular Surface Replacement. ASR cups were implanted between late 2005 and 2009. The ASR XL cups were implanted from 2008 to 2009.
DePuy has sold about 93,000 artificial hip systems worldwide. The systems use metal for both the socket and the ball portions of the joint, hence are called metal-on-metal systems, since the two parts of the joint articulate with each. This has resulted in problems of metal debris being sloughed off into the patient’s body.
The ball and socket joints are made from metals such as cobalt and chromium, since they were thought to be more durable than other materials used for replacements. Elevated levels of cobalt and chromium are now appearing in patients’ blood.
Symptoms of a problem with the artificial cup are pain deep in the groin, difficulty rising from being seated, increased pain when walking, popping sounds when walking.
If you have had a DePuy hip transplant, it is important to call your surgeon to find out if you have been implanted with the defective artificial socket.
If you’ve suffered as a result of the recalled device, you should contact a DePuy ASR hip implant lawyer who can help you recover compensation for the pain, suffering and expense of needing further surgery.
