DePuy Mitek is a division of DePuy Orthopaedics, which concentrates on sports medicine products. DePuy is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, which has been plagued by defective products, resulting in the recall of several medical devices and other products.

DePuy Mitek develops and manufacturers orthopaedic sports medicine products and soft tissue repair devices. In August 2010, DePuy Mitek and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated a recall of 13 products related to the integrated VAPR® line of electrodes. The recall applied to all non-expired inventory and was due to problems with the packaging. The packaging did not meet specifications for pouch seal width dimensions, and led to problems with sterility.
This recall was inconsequential compared to problems arising at the same time involving products manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics. Also in August 2010, DePuy was forced to recall several of its hip implant devices due to a high failure rate among the products. The hip implants were defective due to the generation of metal debris from areas where there was metal-on-metal friction. Other defects have caused some of the implants to fail prematurely due to loosening of the system from the bone.
DePuy had managed to bring these products to market without subjecting them to the rigorous testing the FDA usually requires.
Metal debris in the bloodstream can cause metal poisoning. The problems associated can include:
Patients have also been caused harm because of problems with the actual design of the hip implants. According to reports, some patients have experienced an actual loosening of the cup component of the hip system. The cup portion isn't deep enough to hold the ball component of the implant in some patients. This can result in fractures and severe pain.
Surgeons have also made complaints that the DePuy hip implant is hard to implant because of the cup design
The recall by DePuy Mitek is another sign that the company may be putting the patients who are given DePuy products at risk. DePuy Mitek and DePuy Orthopaedics can be held responsible for their lack of testing and defective manufacturing through litigation on behalf of patients that are injured by the products. Products that are subject to recall are usually products that never should have been sold in the first place.
If you or a loved one has been injured by DePuy products, you should contact a DePuy hip implant attorney. You may be able to receive compensation for your injuries, and your pain and suffering.
The number of lawsuits involving defective hip implants made by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., continue to stack up in court. DePuy, a division of Johnson...
