DePuy Orthopaedics makes a type of hip replacement device consisting of a metal implant cup that fits into the hip bone and a metal ball attached to a stem that fits into the thighbone (femur). This device received approval in 2005 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This device has been named an ASR implant, for “articular surface replacement.” It belongs to a category of implants known as metal-on-metal implants. The metals include:
When these devices were approved, they were expected to last longer than other implant materials being used. Other types of implants, which have been used and are being improved upon today, are:
However, not long after approval, problems began to arise with the metal-on-metal implants.
One problem with the implants was the metal debris that was produced by the friction of the metal parts rubbing together. Doctors and their patients found that the debris cast off by the rubbing of the parts was causing severe inflammatory responses in some patients. Muscle and other soft tissue were being damaged. Plus, metal ions were showing up everywhere in the body. No one knew of any damage these ions might cause, but nonetheless, they were there.
Another problem was the design of the cup implant. It was too shallow and as a result was failing much too early. Hip implants normally last at least 15 years. The DePuy implants were failing within a few years. In addition, the cup was very difficult for the surgeon to properly insert into the body, often creating problems after surgery.
These metal-on-metal implant problems have led to many revisions or corrective surgeries being done in these patients. In addition to needing more surgery, patients have to endure the pain, expense and recovery from another surgical procedure.
Since early 2008, at least 400 implant adverse events in U.S. patients receiving the implants have been reported to the FDA. Because of this recall there has been an increasing demand for DePuy implant lawyers that have real experience dealing with these specific defective products.
In March 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics issued an urgent safety notice that the implant cup was failing. This was two years after DePuy began to realize there were problems with its implant. This time lag was much too great, according to an Australian researcher who maintains a database on implants. DePuy took the implant off the market in Australia in December 2009.
The latest update is a recall of some 93,000 hip implant systems. The ASR XL Acetabular System, which has been sold worldwide since 2004 and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which has not been sold in the U.S., were involved in the Aug. 26, 2010 recall.
