Hip replacement surgery has been a common procedure for many years. The artificial hip joint consists of two main parts that fit together to simulate the bones, configuration, and motion of the natural joint.
The hip joint then moves when the femoral stem rotates within the socket as our bones normally do.
Traditionally, the different parts of the artificial hip are composed of metal and plastic. Other joints are made of ceramic parts. More recently, though, metal has been used throughout the joint, so that there is metal-on-metal action when the hip moves. Therefore the different possibilities for hip materials are:
DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their metal-on-metal joint replacement in 2005. They called their new technology ASR for “articular surface replacement.” Soon after approval, however, problems began to arise with the new implant materials and lawsuits against DePuy started to mount.
Problems included:
Surgeons have had to replace the joint within as little as three to five years because of these problems. This compares with 15 years for the life of previous hip implants.
These problems have been leading to revision surgery in which the malfunctioning hip has to be corrected through further surgery. This results in the pain of additional surgery and recovery plus the expense of another operation.
DePuy just issued a recall Aug. 26, 2010. The recall involved 93,000 hip implant systems sold in the U.S. and worldwide, under product names, ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System (only sold outside the U.S.)
