Though common among older people, people of any age can have hip replacement surgery to ease the pain of arthritis or reverse joint damage. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. During full hip replacement surgery, either the head or socket can be replaced with an artificial component made of a variety of materials, including ceramic, metal or plastic. The components then adhere to the surrounding bone. Partial hip replacement surgery involves resurfacing the hip joint to reduce pain.
DePuy Orthopaedics, a Johnson & Johnson Company, developed hip prosthesis medical devices commonly used in hip replacement surgery, called ASR™ XL Acetabular System and ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.
The hip implant systems consist of a stem and femoral head made of metal, a metal liner and a metal acetabular cup. The components work to replicate the natural motion of the hip, returning functionality to the patient without the associated pain. The products can be used together or to replace either portion of the joint.
Two of DePuy’s hip implants were recalled at the end of August due to failure. Though the devices aren’t designed to last forever, they do typically last about 15 years or so before another replacement surgery is necessary. In many patients, the DePuy ASR™ Acetabular Cup failed not long after the surgical procedure.
Patients complained of pain, reduced mobility and range of motion and reactions to metal-on-metal wear, which caused damage to the surrounding soft tissue. In addition, the implant is found to have released high levels of metal ions into the affected patients.
Patients weren’t the only ones complaining about the device: physicians complained that the device was smaller than other comparable devices and proved trickier to insert. As a result of the metal ion release, the surgery to correct the joint and reverse damage becomes even more complicated.
