Symptoms of DePuy ASR™ Hip Implant Failure

In August of 2010, DePuy Orthopedics announced the recall of multiple hip implants, including the ASR™ XL Acetabular hip replacement system. Up to one in eight patients may be forced to undergo revision surgery due to early failure.

The problems with the ASR™ systems stem from the flawed design of the hip implant. The device has been found to slip, and the shell may dislocate, loosen, or resist bone growth. More commonly, the metal hip is subject to metal-on-metal friction in certain areas, which generate microscopic metal shavings.

In February 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that there are "unique risks" for metal hip implants where there is metal-on-metal friction. The metal debris can damage nearby tissue and be released into the surrounding tissue and blood. In addition to damaging surrounding tissue, the metal ions in the bloodstream can lead to other serious medical problems.

Signs of a Failed Hip Implant

Pain or general discomfort in the groin, hip or leg
Swelling
Lack of flexibility which results in a limp or change of stride
