DePuy Hip Revision Surgery

DePuy Orthopaedics has recently recalled several of its hip implants due to a high failure rate. When an implant fails, a second surgery, known as hip revision surgery, is required to replace the original implant.

It has been estimated that up to 13 percent of recipients of DePuy hip implants have needed a hip revision surgery within 5 years of the initial implantation. Hip implants are generally expected to last at least 15 years.

Some patients have required revision surgery after experiencing an early failure of the system. When an artificial hip fails, it will usually loosen itself from the bone. This can cause bone fractures and other serious injuries.

In addition to early failures, DePuy implants are made completely of metal, which can generate metal debris due to metal-on-metal friction. This debris is allegedly responsible for damaging soft tissue in the vicinity of the hip, and several health risks arising from metal in the bloodstream.
