DePuy ASR Hip Replacement

Because of problems with its ASR artificial hip replacements, in August 2010 DePuy Orthopaedics announced that it was recalling its ASR™ XL Acetabular and ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Systems. The DePuy hip replacement recall impacts patients who received the ASR artificial hip replacements in 2003 and after.

In the spring before the DePuy hip replacement recall was announced the company had phased out the sale of these ASR artificial hip replacements.

In its recall, DePuy is telling patients to find out if they received a DePuy hip replacement and that it would cover out-of-pocket expenses for testing and revision surgery. It is unclear just what expenses are being covered and whether ongoing testing will be covered. There has been no offer of compensation for pain and suffering.

Problems with Replacement Hip

Patients who received the defective ASR artificial hip replacements have experienced a multitude of problems. Symptoms of the failed DePuy hip replacement include:

Pain
Swelling
Weakness
Difficulty walking

The defective device can cause injury to muscles and nerves in and beyond the hip area.

Some recipients have contacted a DePuy hip recall lawyer, concerned about cancer causing debris entering the bloodstream. At least one DePuy lawsuit has claimed that the company knew about the high rate of problems with the DePuy hip replacement, but did not warn surgeons who continued to perform surgery using the ASR artificial hip replacements.

Artificial hip replacements are intended to last at least 15 years, but the DePuy ASR artificial hip replacement problems have been reported within a little more than a year after the original implant surgery. The failures have caused 1 in 8 patients to undergo removal and replacement surgery – called a revision surgery.

Revision surgery is painful and can have a long recovery time. Lawsuits have already been filed against DePuy over problems with the ASR artificial hip replacements and more are expected.
