Hip replacement surgery refers to a surgical procedure in which the ends of damaged bones are replaced to create a new surface. Typically, the upper portion of the thigh bone will be replaced and the hip socket will be resurfaced in hip replacement surgery. Damaged cartilage will also be replaced.
DePuy Orthopaedics makes a number of hip implants. The ASR XL Acetabular System is what is called a metal-on-metal hip replacement system. The components of the system are made out of metal, hence the name.
The DePuy ASR XL hip replacement is comprised of a metal ball and socket that move against each other. Over a period of time, the metal wears down, which can cause extremely small particles to shed into the body. While this process is known and expected, some patients may have a bad reaction to the metal particles, which can cause severe pain and swelling in the joint area. Affected patients will likely require revision surgery.
The ASR XL Acetabular System was first approved in July 2003. Since its approval a number of patients have reported problems with the artificial hip implants. Data shows that some 13 percent of all patients who received this specific system will need revision surgery after only five years.
Symptoms of a potential problem may include:
Due to the recalled DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System the manufacturer is offering free testing for patients who have the recalled implants. The company says it will test the artificial hips to make sure they are functioning properly. Tests may include x-rays of the hip as well as a blood test to determine if there are metal particles around the hip. An ultrasound or MRI may also be used to determine if you are having a bad reaction to the particles.
Another major concern with these hip implant systems is the loosening of the acetabular cup. This is a potential defect of the hip implant system and will require revision surgery to fix. Failure of these systems can be dangerous and cause a patient extreme discomfort and pain.
If you are in need of or already have undergone revision surgery, you may qualify to seek and recover financial compensation for your medical expenses as well as your pain and suffering. For more information, or to schedule a consultation contact a DePuy defect lawyer today.
