DePuy ASR™ XL Hip Implant Problems

Depuy Orthopaedics is the manufacturer of several hip implant systems that have been recalled by the FDA due to safety concerns for the recipients. The DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System is one of these devices. While the DePuy implant problems and the injuries they have caused are bad enough, it turns out that the company used a controversial loophole in FDA testing procedures to avoid costly and time consuming clinical trials.

The loophole allowed DePuy Orthopaedics to claim that its hip replacement system was the functional equivalent of other devices already on the market. It turns out that like many others products that are eventually recalled, this was not exactly true. In fact, there are several differences in the products, and if tested thoroughly the DePuy implant problems likely would have been discovered before exposing over 90,000 people to its harmful effects.

Problems with DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System

Some of the DePuy ASR™ XL implant problems are caused by friction generated in the replacement joint, which causes loose metal debris to escape into the body. The debris causes severe pain in the hip region, and if untreated can spread to other parts of the body. In some cases the contamination can lead to nerve damage and even affect the brain.

Other problems can occur if the hip implant loosens prematurely. Several patients have reported early failure of their implants, in only a few years after implantation.

DePuy ASR™ XL implant problems require a second surgery, known as a revision surgery, to replace the faulty implant.
