Two types of hip replacement systems have failed to last as long as expected and are being recalled by their manufacturer. DePuy Orthopaedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, is recalling the ASR XL Acetabular System, which is a total hip replacement for a person’s natural hip socket. The other, which has been approved for use only outside the United States, is the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.
When the Hip Resurfacing System is used, more of the patient’s own bone tissue is kept in place, although it is a more aggressive type of surgery. This surgery involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur or thighbone.
While hip implants normally last for about 15 years, the DePuy artificial implants are failing five years after surgery, and sometimes as soon as two years following the artificial hip operation.
The DePuy hip implant cup replaces a person’s normal hip socket with an artificial implant that is cup shaped and resembles a hollow ball cut in half. It is in within this cup that the round head of the femur rotates. The artificial round head is attached to a stem that is implanted into the femur. Both the cup and the head are made of metal and thus this is called a metal-on-metal implant.

According to a March article in the New York Times, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had been hearing from surgeons unhappy with the artificial hip joints for more than two years. Many doctors were dismayed that it took so long for the DePuy hip recall. The federal agency had heard complaints from almost 400 doctors since the early months of 2008.
