Two hip replacement implants distributed by DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of global healthcare giant Johnson and Johnson, are the subject of a voluntary defective product recall. The company has recalled its ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System that were implanted in 2003 and after and have told patients to get tested to see of they received a defective product.
Symptoms of the failed DePuy hip replacement include pain, swelling, weakness and trouble walking. The defective device can cause injury to the bones, muscles, soft tissue and nerves in the hip area. Symptoms and lasting damage can also occur in the legs and back.
Other signs that you received a DePuy defective product will only show up in the ion blood testing. The blood test will show if the metal pieces of the defective product are rubbing against each other creating microscopic metal debris that spreads through your bloodstream. Even if the initial test is negative, ongoing testing for metal toxicity is recommended by DePuy.

The recall of the defective DePuy ASR acetabular systems may have come too late according to product liability lawsuits that have already been filed against the company. Reports of failures had been being made for years before the DePuy defect recall, both here and abroad.
Still, the company continued to sell the defective DePuy ASR acetabular systems even after a high failure rate was logged. Personal injury lawyers believe the company is liable for more than the basic reimbursement it has promised through the recall to patients who received the defective product.
If you have a DePuy implant you should contact a DePuy defect attorney to learn what rights you may have.
