Problems with the DePuy Hip Implant

DePuy made two types of implants that have been recalled:

• DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System, which has been used only outside of the United States

Surgeons had been unhappy with the implant because a design flaw, they said, made part of the acetabular cup difficult to insert into the patient. This part of the device is a cup-shaped piece that is inserted into the patient’s pelvis bone.  It is a receptacle for the femoral head, which is ball-shaped and fits into the cup, articulating within it, just as a person’s ball and socket hip joint work.

Another problem with the implants is that the parts that articulate together are made of metal. While the idea was a good one, that is, that the slippery metal parts would smoothly articulate against each other, an unforeseen result occurred. The metal-against-metal surfaces were casting off debris as they articulated. This resulted in tiny particles of debris being carried to other parts of the body through the blood stream. This caused inflammation of the surrounding bone, muscles and other soft tissue in some patients.
