DePuy Orthopaedics, manufacturer of osteopathic medical devices and a division of Johnson & Johnson Company, issued a recall at the end of August for its hip replacement devices. The DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Systems are known as metal-on-metal hip implant systems because they are made of metal materials including cobalt and chromium.
Patients who received DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System have complained of pain and decreased mobility, only to find that their hip replacement devices had begun to wear down prematurely. A defect in the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System has caused some of the acetabular cups to loosen, requiring revision surgery.
Additionally, some patients have experienced infection and damaged tissue after heavy metals from the metal-on-metal hip implants seeped into their blood streams.
DePuy’s metal-on-metal hip implants have been shown to wear earlier than comparable implants, releasing metal ions into the body. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. Either the ball or socket portion of the hip joint can be replaced or resurfaced or the whole joint can be replaced (DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System was only used outside the U.S., however). Though the socket joint can be replaced with a device with a ceramic bearing surface, metal is often used as well.
The DePuy devices, comprised of a variety of metal materials including chromium, cobalt and molybdenum, have been shown to wear significantly sooner than other similar brands. Additionally, the implants are shown to release metal debris and shards into the soft tissue surrounding the implant, releasing heavy metals and metal ions into the blood. The release of metals can increase levels of toxicity into the blood stream, creating a potential risk to health.
To further complicate the situation, studies have shown that women who have had metal-on-metal hip implants can pass the metal ions to the fetus during pregnancy. High levels of chromium and cobalt are released into the blood stream of the mother and fetus. However, it’s unknown whether the levels pose a health risk to the mother or the baby.
Patients who have experienced pain or other complications from a defective DePuy hip replacement product will have to undergo corrective surgery to replace the damaged components. Even physicians find the corrective surgery more difficult than the original surgery. Soft tissue surrounding the joint may be damaged, further complicating the surgery.
