DePuy, a Johnson & Johnson division, the maker of the artificial hips, announced the recall in April 2010. About 93,000 of the two DePuy hip implants have been surgically inserted into patients worldwide and are being recalled. The DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System

The DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System is a total hip replacement, and has been used in patients in both the United States and the rest of the world. The other, the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System, has not been approved for use in the United States, and is used only in patients outside of the country. This system conserves more of the patient’s own tissue.

Complications of Hip Implant Failure

When a hip implant fails, the patient will need to have the original hip implant removed and a new replacement implanted surgically. This is called revision surgery. This second procedure is more complicated than the initial implant surgery. In this case, the patient is subjected to further pain, both when the original implant fails and during the recovery period after the second surgery.

In addition to the extra pain and suffering the patient must endure, the revision surgery is expensive. DePuy has said it would pay all reasonable and customary costs associated with the recalled hip implants and additional surgery. A Johnson & Johnson earnings report said sales of DePuy products were about $5.4 billion last year.
