It is estimated that more than 35 million Americans wear dentures. Those with ill-fitting dentures are more likely to use more dental adhesive, increasing their exposure to zinc, one of the ingredients in denture creams to enhance adhesiveness. The trace element has been found to be causing zinc poisoning in many denture wearers.
A recent study at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center linked excess use of dental adhesives to serious neurological problems.
A reporter for the St. Petersburg Times told the story of a Miami man who used Super Poligrip® for years. He began to have trouble walking, started to use a cane, then a walker and eventually became paralyzed below the waist. His doctors tracked the problem to zinc poisoning due to ingesting too much zinc from the adhesive he used on his dentures.
The man stopped using the denture adhesive, but never regained feeling in his legs. He finally died from respiratory distress syndrome, which was linked to the nerve damage he suffered as a result of zinc poisoning and its related effects. The Miami attorney representing the man said they want GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to pay for the injury caused to their client. He didn’t say how much they were asking for.
The number of denture cream lawsuits keeps growing, charging GSK, the maker of Poligrip®, and Procter & Gamble (P&G), the maker of Fixodent®, with failing to warn consumers about the dangers of zinc contained in their dental adhesives or how much adhesive it was safe to use. The lawsuits allege that the denture adhesives can expose users to more than six times as much as the daily allowance recommended for zinc.
A multidistrict litigation (MDL) lawsuit has been filed in Miami, consolidating more than 70 denture cream lawsuits against the dental adhesive manufacturers. It has been reported that GSK has set up a fund to begin to pay claimants. Neither the amount of money set aside nor the disbursements have yet been made public. A lawsuit against P&G is scheduled for June 2011.
In its second quarter earnings report, GSK announced that, “with respect to the Poligrip® product liability litigation, the Group has reached agreement in principle to settle the vast majority of cases.”
Since the start of litigation, GSK and P&G have added warnings about zinc to the products’ labels and websites. GSK announced it was recalling its zinc-containing Super Poligrip® products and substituting non-zinc-containing adhesives for them.
