National Public Radio announced early this year that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was recalling some of its denture adhesive products because they contain zinc, a trace element that ingested in excessive quantities can cause serious neurological problems.
In a recent recall, GSK took Super Poligrip® Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care off the market, while they worked on making a zinc-free denture cream. The trace element, which we all need in minimal amounts, helps false teeth stick in place. It enhances the adherent properties of the cream.

In the wake of the denture cream recalls, the number of lawsuits being filed continues to grow. More than 70 lawsuits against dental cream manufacturers have been consolidated in Miami into multidistrict litigation and GSK has been said to be setting up a reimbursement fund to pay claimants. However, neither the amount of money set aside nor the disbursements have been announced. A P&G lawsuit is set for June 2011.
"With respect to the Poligrip® product liability litigation, the Group (GlaxoSmithKline) has reached agreement in principle to settle the vast majority of cases," GSK said in its second quarter earnings report.
