Denture Cream Poisoning

Use of denture cream adhesives has been found to poison some consumers by exposing them to unhealthy levels of zinc. It does not take a lot of zinc to produce zinc poisoning. We all need zinc to be healthy, but only in small amounts.

According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, adult men need about 11 mg. and adult women need about 8 mg. per day.

When the body is exposed to more than that small level of zinc it can experience zinc poisoning.

Men and women who have been using denture cream in excessive amounts are at an increased risk of suffering from zinc poisoning. According to reports, one man who was studied was using two tubes of denture cream a week.

Until a short time ago, both Poligrip and Fixodent denture creams contained zinc to make them adhere better and mask the unpleasant smell of the creams.

The makers of Poligrip, however, in response to a study conducted at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and a rising number of complaints of zinc toxicity, removed the zinc from their products.

Fixodent left the zinc in their creams.

Symptoms of Denture Cream Poisoning

The symptoms of denture cream poisoning are the symptoms of zinc toxicity. Too much zinc harms the peripheral nervous system, which includes all of nerves except for those in the spinal cord and brain.

Symptoms develop slowly over time. They can begin with numbness and tingling in the fingers and toes. As the poisoning progresses, additional symptoms appear. These include:

Weakness in muscles and limbs
Problems with balance
Trouble walking
Taking shorter steps
Cramping in muscles
Paralysis
Effect on the sense of smell and taste

An example of progressive symptoms are those of a Florida man who used large amounts of denture cream. His symptoms advanced to the point where he used a cane, then a walker and after that a wheel chair. The man eventually died of respiratory arrest.
