Denture Cream Ingredients

"Conclusion: Denture cream contains zinc, and chronic excessive use may result in hypocupremia and serious neurologic disease," according to a 2008 peer-reviewed research article in the Journal Neurology, published online.

Hypocupremia means low levels of copper in the body. The research article concludes that the zinc in denture creams, when the creams are used to excess, can cause copper deficiency and lead to serious neurologic disease. The body's levels of zinc and copper need to be in a proper delicate balance. Having too much or too little of one, affects the amount of the other.

Potential Risks of Too Much Denture Cream

The risk of harmful effects is related to the amount of denture cream used. Some people have used an overdose of denture creams; as much as two tubes a week, applying the cream in excessive amounts several times a day to keep their dentures secure. These people are among the patients having severe neurologic symptoms such as:

Difficulty with balance and walking
Pain, tingling or numbness in the limbs and muscles
Cramping
Paralysis of the legs
Effect on senses of taste and smell

Poligrip®
Fixodent®
DG brand denture adhesive creams (generic brands)

The lawsuits claim that the manufacturers did not warn the users of the denture cream of the possibility of zinc toxicity when using too much cream. The number of persons affected by the zinc poisoning continues to grow, as do the number of lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the maker of Poligrip®, and Proctor & Gamble (P&G), the maker of Fixodent®.

An MDL (multidistrict litigation) group of 70 lawsuits is being filed in Florida against GSK and P&G. Another lawsuit against P&G is planned for June 2011. MDL combines civil lawsuits that have common issues and are pending in different districts into a single district for coordinated pretrial hearings.
