What is Zinc?

Zinc is a mineral found in plants that is an essential building block in the functions of the human body. However, the zinc compounds that are found in denture cream adhesive do nothing to benefit the body. They can lead to an excessive build up in zinc in the blood stream.

What is Hyperzincemia?

Hyperzincemia occurs when levels of zinc in the body are high enough that it is considered toxic. In addition to several medical problems caused by the zinc itself, hyperzincemia hinders the absorption of other needed minerals such as copper.

Study About Denture Cream Hyperzincemia

A medical study conducted by the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center determined that denture cream adhesive was being used at a much faster rate by denture wearers than manufacturers claimed. It also determined that although Fixodent and PoliGrip did not list zinc as ingredient in the denture cream adhesive, it was present in both.

The Study also concluded that denture cream users who used the product at realistic levels, far higher than manufacturer claimed they would need, were at high risk to develop hyperzincemia.
