The family of a 64-year-old Florida man is suing GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for his wrongful death that they say was caused by his Poligrip denture cream. He died of "zinc overload," said the New York Times, quoting his autopsy report.
Users of Fixodent and Poligrip denture creams are suing the companies making these products, claiming their health has been harmed by zinc poisoning.
Procter & Gamble, makers of Fixodent, still use a small amount of zinc in their denture adhesive products. GSK, the makers of Poligrip, have reformulated their denture adhesive cream and discontinued using zinc in their products. The zinc enhances the adherent properties of the creams and masks an unpleasant odor.
However, our bodies need only a small amount of zinc — about 8 mg in women and 11 mg in men, per day. Amounts much greater than that produce zinc toxicity, which causes neurological problems. Some users of the cream experiencing health problems were using one to two tubes of cream a week.
Too much zinc depletes the body of copper, a necessary element for a healthy nervous system.
Consumers using the denture adhesives risk harming their nervous systems. Some patients have developed symptoms of neuropathy, many of which do not go away once the person stops using the cream. Neuropathy symptoms, meaning harm to the nerves, can occur because of overuse of zinc by these patients and may include:
Zinc poisoning can lead to death by respiratory arrest.
Aside from death attributed to denture adhesives, hundreds of patients are claiming they are suffering the harmful effects of zinc used in the cream.
The connection between the zinc in denture cream and harmful effects on the body was made only a few years ago by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. They published their findings in the journal Neurology in 2008. As news of this connection spreads, more and more people are realizing their symptoms might be due to their use of denture cream.
If you or someone you love has been suffering the harmful effects of denture adhesive, you should contact a denture adhesive lawyer who can discuss the details of your individual situation with you.
