In part due to consumer demand for cheaper prices and because of the flood of cheap imports from China and other low cost overseas manufacturing, Consumers Union believes the numbers of products that threaten American safety standards that can be found on shelves are everywhere. While the group''s investigators did say some of the products it found were legal, the use of them among children was questionable. Consumers Union is the organization that publishes Consumer Reports.
Every year, many baby products fail standards for national safety. Even if recalled baby products announcements have been made, it does not always mean every model will be taken off the market immediately. In addition to the number of babies already injured or at risk for injury, the failure to adequately notify all owners of the recalled baby products of the dangers involved can allow for more, sometimes fatal, injury risks.
Recalled baby products can prevent accidents, costs, disability, as well as other problems if discovered promptly and if consumers are made immediately aware of the defective products. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is in charge of protecting the public from unreasonable risks of death and serious injury as the result of consumer products. According to the CPSC, deaths, injuries and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation over $700 billion annually.
Consumers Union claims part of the reason defective products are numbering so high is in part due to the relaxed enforcement of the CPSC, with the number of federal recalls, detained shipments and other enforcement actions down 35 percent between 2001 and 2003. A spokesman for the CPSC has vigorously denied the agency has had looser enforcement and says the number of recalls is up from 279 in 2003 to 356 in 2004. The number, according to the CPSC spokesman, of crib related deaths has been reduced by 90 percent and an 84 percent reduction in injuries of children in baby walkers because of the agency.
Included in Consumers Union''s report published in the November 2004 issue of Consumer Reports, the group said it found many examples of contradictory policies and practices keeping unsafe goods on the market. Consumers Union said it found “scores of toys, mostly from China” selling in American stores with small parts that can choke children and sharp edges that can cut children. Recalled baby products are especially dangerous because of the vulnerability of babies, in part because of their inability to detect and communicate if a danger is present until it is too late.
A simple recalled baby products announcement does not mean all risk has been eliminated. Consumers must be aware of the alert, as well as make sure recall products are not purchased from secondhand sources. For parents with babies and young children especially, it is very important to be aware of recalled baby products. By being aware consumers, parents will be able to promptly remove recalled baby products from use as immediately as possible. Since the CPSC is responsible for overseeing over 15,000 types of consumer products, by the time recalled baby products announcements are made it could have already affected a high number of babies.
Evenflo has recalled about one million defective child car seats after government testing showed they could fail to protect children during side-impact collisions.
