Darvon® and Darvocet® have been the subject of controversy for years because of their dangerous side effects. These consisted of two primary problems. The drug has been linked to an increased risk of:
The European Union in 2009 and the United Kingdom in 2005 banned the sale of the drugs in their countries because of the dangerous side effects associated with the active ingredient, propoxyphene.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally requested that the drug manufacturer Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc. recall Darvon® and Darvocet® from the market late in 2010. The FDA is also asking all manufacturers who make generic propoxyphene to participate in the recall.
"Too little, too late," was how Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Health Research Group, described the FDA recall. "Due to FDA negligence, at least 1,000 to 2,000 or more people in the U.S. have died from using propoxyphene since the time the UK ban was announced."
Dr. Wolfe said his watchdog group was going to ask for a congressional investigation into the FDA's long delay in withdrawing the drug from the market.
A study on dogs as long as 31 years ago by Eli Lilly, the discoverers of propoxyphene, showed that "cardiac conduction depression may be a factor in some of the human cardiac toxicities associated with propoxyphene overdose."
It has been decades, therefore, that cardiac toxicity has been suspected as a severe side effect of propoxyphene.
The FDA, before recalling the drugs containing the toxic agent propoxyphene, had already placed black box warnings about the drugs' dangers on the medication inserts. The Darvon®/Darvocet® warning cautioned users to be aware of the potential for the drugs' causing severe, potentially lethal heart problems, as well as the dangers of overdosing and suicide.
Our Darvon® lawyers are available to investigate serious injury and death cases on behalf of people who took any form of propoxyphene and suffered a heart complication, dangerous overdose, or other side effect. We are also available to speak with families whose loved ones have died a sudden death while taking one of the medications.
