Important Information about Darvon®

Darvon® is a medication prescribed to treat mild to moderate pain. The company that manufactures Darvon® agreed to pull it from the U.S. market in November 2010 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered a link between its active ingredient propoxyphene and heart problems.

Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals also recalled Darvocet®, another pain medication that shares the same active ingredient. Darvocet® combines propoxyphene with acetaminophen and is also used to treat mild to moderate pain. Both drugs have been linked to serious, potentially fatal heart complications.

According to data found in a recent study, propoxyphene affects the electrical activity of the heart. This has resulted in abnormal heart rhythms in some patients. The effects can be fatal.
