Darvocet® was recalled and is no longer available in the U.S. because of scientific data that links the drug to fatal heart abnormalities. Until now, however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) kept them on the market because it was not sure that the risks outweighed the benefit.

Propoxyphene was first introduced to the market in the 1950s as Darvon®. It was made by Eli Lilly & Co. Today, it is more commonly manufactured as Darvocet®, which is a combination of propoxyphene and another pain reliever called acetaminophen. Both Darvon® and Darvocet® are manufactured by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc.
