Darvocet, a narcotic pain killer, was recently taken off the market by its manufacturer at the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA had reviewed new data showing the opioid, prescribed for mild to moderate pain, was harming the heart. The risks to the heart of taking Darvocet, the FDA concluded, outweighed the pain-killing benefit of the drug.
The research showed that one of the two main ingredients in Darvocet, propoxyphene, could alter the electrical activity of the heart seen on electrocardiograms. This abnormal electrical activity can lead to heart rhythm irregularities that put a patient at risk for a heart attack.
Dr. Sidney Wolfe, speaking for the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, said the recall was, "too little, too late." Dr. Wolfe is the current director of the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, a consumer affairs and lobbying organization.
Dr. Wolfe referred to Britain's recall of the medication six years ago, saying, "Due to FDA negligence, at least 1,000 to 2,000 or more people in the United States have died from using propoxyphene since the time the U.K. ban was announced."
