A controversial drug for many years, Darvocet was recalled from the U.S. market on Nov. 19, 2010. The action came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finished reviewing a number of studies of the drug that indicated it was related to heart rhythm abnormalities and heart attack death.
The FDA said it was recalling the medication because it was seriously harmful to the heart, even when taken at normal doses.
Darvocet is a narcotic painkiller used to treat mild to moderate pain. It is a combination of two active ingredients:
The drug was considered for withdrawal from the market in the United States in July 2009, but the FDA announced that the benefits of propoxyphene outweighed its disadvantages according to all the known safety risks at the time.
But further studies of the medication revealed that electrocardiograms showed it was causing serious interruptions to the normal electrical activity of the heart. When these disruptions become dangerous enough, they can cause a heart attack and death.
It was found that propoxyphene could be especially harmful to patients with impaired kidney function because the drug cannot be eliminated from the body quickly enough and therefore accumulates. Other patients who are at higher risk of heart problems are those taking additional drugs for heart disease and patients who cannot metabolize the drug well enough.
Other medications can be substituted for propoxyphene to control pain, but they too each have their own risks. They are:
All the narcotic drugs involve the risk of addiction. Codeine can also cause severe constipation. Aspirin can cause the stomach and intestines to bleed and may result in other serious problems. Acetaminophen, the primary ingredient in Tylenol, can damage the liver.
Have you or someone you love been injured by taking Darvocet? Dr. Sidney Wolfe of the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, called the Darvocet withdrawal from the market "too little too late." In the last six years, since the United Kingdom took Darvocet off the market, he estimated that between 1,000 and 2,000 persons in the United States have died from using propoxyphene. If you or someone you know has been injured or died as a result of taking Darvocet, you should contact a Darvocet lawsuit attorney to find out if you qualify to file a lawsuit and recover compensation.
