On Nov. 19, 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Xanodyne, the manufacturer of Darvocet®, agreed to withdraw the drug from the market. The reason was Darvocet®’s harm to the heart.
After a review of new study data, the FDA concluded that Darvocet®, Darvon®, and its generic equivalents pose serious problems to the electrical activity of the heart and cause potentially fatal arrhythmias that could lead to heart attacks.
“The FDA,” according to Dr. John Jenkins, “is pleased by Xanodyne’s decision to voluntarily remove its products from the U.S. market.” Dr. Jenkins is Director of the Office of New Drugs in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “These new heart data significantly alter propoxyphene’s risk-benefit profile. The drug’s effectiveness in reducing pain is no longer enough to outweigh the drug’s serious potential heart risks.”
Propoxyphene is the active ingredient in Darvon®. In Darvocet®, the main active ingredients are propoxyphene and acetaminophen. Propoxyphene is a narcotic painkiller of mild to moderate potency. Acetaminophen is a weaker painkiller than enhances the efficacy of propoxyphene.
The FDA announced it was advising health care professionals to stop prescribing propoxyphene and asking patients currently taking the drug to contact their doctors as soon as possible to discuss changing to another medication to manage their pain.
In addition to propoxyphene causing heart attacks, other potentially fatal heart problems that have come to light include:
If you or someone you love has taken Darvon®, Darvocet®, or a generic drug containing propoxyphene and had a heart attack, you should consider filing a heart attack lawsuit. This medication has been controversial for many years. Some experts have said thousands of lives could have been saved had this drug been pulled from the market earlier.
