The once popular narcotic pain medicine, Darvocet®, has been recalled due to dangerous side effects on the heart. What is Heart Arrhythmia?

The term heart arrhythmia is used to describe irregular heartbeats. Sometimes called dysrhythmia, heart arrhythmia is a serious condition that can be fatal. Irregular heart rates can also occur, but do not go hand-in-hand with heart arrhythmia.

• Atrial fibrillation, a type of arrythmia that causes the upper chambers of the heart to function abnormally
• Atrial flutter, an arrhythmia caused by fast circuits in the atrium
• Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), which refers to rapid heart rate with a regular rhythm
• Accessory pathway tachycardias, an unusually fast heartbeat that is caused by an additional pathway between the atria and ventricles
• AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, caused by extra pathways to the AV node that can result in heart palpitations, fainting or heart failure
• Ventricular tachycardia (V-tach), rapid heart rate that results in a low blood flow throughout the body
• Ventricular fibrillation, a type of arrhythmia that is characterized by disorganized impulses that come from the ventricles of the heart (this is considered a medical emergency and should be treated immediately)
• Long QT syndrome, this is usually an inherited condition that is very serious and can result in sudden death
• Bradyarrhythmias, a type of condition that is caused by problems in the electrical conduction system of the heart, resulting in slow heart rhythms
• Sinus node dysfunction, a condition characterized by slow heart rhythms
• Heart block, a condition in which the electrical impulses are completely blocked and from traveling from the sinus node to the ventricles
