The narcotic pain medication Darvocet comes in two dose sizes:
Darvocet, because of the potential damage it could do to the heart, was withdrawn from the market November 19, 2010.
The drug, which is meant to subdue mild to moderate pain, acts on the central nervous system to produce its effect.
There have been times when patients intentionally or accidentally have taken an overdose of Darvocet either alone or in combination with other drugs that, like Darvocet, depress the central nervous system. These other drugs include alcohol. In such situations, it is not uncommon for someone to die in the first hour they take an overdose.
Many of the patients who have died after taking propoxyphene have had previous episodes of emotional instability, such as suicidal thoughts or attempts. These patients also were often taking other central nervous system-depressant drugs such as:
Because of these occurrences of actual or attempted suicides, doctors were told to refrain from prescribing propoxyphene-containing medication to patients who had a history of suicidal attempts or ideation (thoughts).
The main danger associated with taking drugs, such as Darvocet or other opioid-containing painkillers, is the possibility of depressing the activity of the central nervous system. While this decreases the perception of pain, it has other serious depressant effects on the central nervous system, including control of breathing.
Caution should be used in prescribing the medication to the elderly or patients with liver or kidney disease. Physicians were told to consider prescribing a smaller daily dose for these patients.
Because the drug is a narcotic, persons taking Darvocet could suffer symptoms of withdrawal and doctors were advised to decrease the dosage slowly over a longer period of time.
You are urged to contact a Darvocet attorney if you or someone you love has suffered adverse effects, including death, as a result of taking this drug. A Darvocet lawyer is familiar with the problems caused by this powerful medication and knows the law pertaining to patients who have been harmed by the drug.
