Darvocet®, an opioid analgesic for mild to moderate pain, can result in accidental, lethal overdose within a very short time of taking the medication. It is important to be aware of the symptoms of overdose and to seek emergency treatment immediately.
Darvocet® contains two active ingredients: propoxyphene, which is a painkiller, and acetaminophen, a less potent painkiller that increases the efficacy of propoxyphene. The ingestion of too much of either ingredient can be dangerous or lethal. The brand name for propoxyphene without acetaminophen is called Darvon®. Darvon® can also result in fatal overdose.
Symptoms of a Darvocet® overdose of include:
Death can follow an overdose on Darvocet® within as little as an hour. The margin of safety between a safe and unsafe dose of Darvocet® is slim.
Normal dosing amounts of Darvocet® are as follows (anything more than these amounts can lead to symptoms of overdose and death):
The elderly and patients with impaired liver or kidney function may require a lower dose than normal.
The blood levels of Darvocet® can be increased by taking certain medications called CYP3A4 inhibitors and by grapefruit juice which also inhibits CYP3A4 liver enzymes. Patients taking these inhibitors, because they increase the levels of propoxyphene in the blood, need to be carefully monitored and may need their doses adjusted.
Substances and drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 and therefore lead to increased levels of propoxyphene in the blood include:
Your doctor should know if you are taking any of these substances while you are taking Darvocet® so that he or she can adjust its dosage.
If you or someone or you love has suffered as a result of either a Darvocet® or Darvon® overdose, you should contact a Darvocet injury attorney right away. You just might qualify for financial compensation. The risk for overdose while on these medications is high.
