Used as a treatment method since the 1800s, cryotherapy is the term to describe a procedure in which abnormal cells or tissues are destroyed via the use of intensely cold liquids or devices. While cryotherapy may be recommended when traditional surgeries are not safe to perform on patients, it may also be indicated for the treatment of a range of benign or malignant conditions, including (but not limited to):
Cryotherapy can be performed by swabbing or spraying an extremely cold liquid, referred to as a cryogen, to the affected area. While doctors may spray or swab an area multiple times (i.e. calling for multiple freeze and thaw sessions), they may also perform cryotherapy by touching a cooled probe to the affected area. The probe method takes significantly longer, however it is especially useful in treating internal abnormalities (rather than those on the skin's surface). The most commonly used cryogen is liquid nitrogen, as it is the coldest liquid available at -320°F.
The most common form of cryotherapy is the use of ice packs (or cold packs) to treat injuries. And, this method is commonly seen in locker rooms to treat sports injuries, such as chronic injuries, sprains or tendonitis.
Once the cold liquid or apparatus is applied to the abnormal tissues, the tissues freeze, their metabolism slows, and the blood vessels in the affected area constrict which, in turn, reduces blood flow to the affected area. The slow thawing process that follows will kill off the abnormal cells without affecting the surrounding, healthy cells. In the aftermath of experiencing cryotherapy, the patient will experience pain relief, as well as a reduction of swelling in the affected area.
Although cryotherapy has a number of benefits and is often successful, it does have a few rare but serious side effects that can cause severe health complications. These can include:
