A huge crib recall was announced on September 21 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The cribs are sold under the names Simplicity and Graco. About a million cribs are involved, making this recall the largest full-size crib recall in U.S. history. The deaths of three children prompted the action.
Drop Rail Problem
The drop rail of the cribs can detach from the crib, making a very dangerous gap between the crib's mattress and side rail in which a child's head can become trapped. Asphyxiation from being trapped there is a potential cause of death.
The crib recall concerns models that were sold nationwide from the beginning of 1998 to May 2007. Several large retailers, including Wal-Mart and Target, sold the cribs for about $100 to $300. The cribs were designed by Simplicity for Children and were manufactured in China.
Fourth Recall for Simplicity Products
This crib recall is the fourth recall since May 2005 for products made by Simplicity for Children, a maker of children's furniture. A crib hazard similar to the design and hardware flaws that are the subject of the most recent recall were also the focus of a June 2006 recall of a different Simplicity crib.
CPSC Inaction
In a statement regarding the latest crib recall, the CPSC reported that it is aware of 55 incidents in the cribs, raising the question of why the CPSC did not act to recall the cribs sooner. In fact, the crib recall closely followed an investigation by Chicago Tribune reporters pointing out that it took the CPSC two years to get around to investigating the death of one child in a Simplicity crib.
