Some researchers believe that Crestor and other statin drugs (to help lower cholesterol levels) can harm the heart. This is based on data published in a January 2009 issue of The Lancet that links the depletion of coenzyme Q10 in myocardial [heart muscle] tissue with an increase in the severity of heart failure.
Coenzyme Q10 is a normally occurring substance in the body that is thought to protect the heart from heart disease. Statins, such as Crestor are cholesterol-lowering medications that are known to lower the body’s levels of Q10. Thus, some researchers are concluding that Crestor and other statins are actually harming the heart by depressing the levels of Q10.
According to the authors of the study, “we have shown that coenzyme Q10 levels, but not statin therapy, are an independent predictor of total mortality in an observational study of 236 patients with heart failure.”
Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the body’s organs and tissues. It is a condition that affects 5.7 million persons in the United States and causes 300,000 to die annually.
