The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute are independent, nonprofit, research and communications organizations funded by auto insurers and dedicated to reducing highway crash deaths, injuries, and property losses. This site contains an enormous amount of information, including recent articles pertaining to highway and automotive safety, independent crash test results, and safety regulations/violations. Excellent resource for evaluating particular automobile manufacturers.

Part of the US Department of Transportation, the NHTSA works to promote automobile safety. Their web site includes information on a wide variety of vehicles and related equipment, including car seats. There is an extensive amount of data available on car crashes, crashworthiness of individual vehicle models, and the latest research and developments. They also track consumer complaints, recalls, and service reports.

The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent Federal agency that investigates every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in the other modes of transportation, conducts special investigations and safety studies, and issues safety recommendations to prevent future accidents. Safety Board investigators are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can access all of their reports and studies through this site, and download PDF versions to your computer. Information regarding public hearings and reports on special investigations are also available here. Auto accident information on this site is particular to highway collisions.
