The use of a group of antidepressants called SSRIs, or selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors, has been linked to an increased risk of craniosynostosis—a serious birth defect of the brain—when taken during the first three months of pregnancy. According to multiple studies, women who take Paxil or other SSRI during this time are almost twice as likely to deliver a baby with craniosynostosis.
If your baby was born with craniosynostosis and an SSRI was taken during pregnancy, you should consult with an experienced attorney as soon as possible to learn about your rights.
What is Craniosynostosis?
Craniosynostosis is a birth defect characterized by the premature closure of one or more joints (also called sutures) between the bones of the skull. As a result of this closure, the brain is not able to grow properly and may become constricted. This constriction can lead to:
Pressure on the brain
Developmental delays
Mental retardation
Seizures
Blindness
An abnormally shaped skull is generally the first sign that a baby has craniosynostosis and surgery is the primary treatment. Prognosis largely depends on the severity of the condition.
Researchers Discover a Link
Researchers from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, presented the findings of a data analysis involving nearly 9,000 infants. The researchers discovered that first trimester exposure to an SSRI increased the risk of craniosynostosis nearly twofold.
Then, an extensive study published in a June 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine confirmed this finding. According to the NEJM study, use of SSRIs during pregnancy was associated with a significantly increased risk of craniosynostosis. Researchers specifically noted a considerable link between the development of craniosynostosis and Prozac.
Both of these studies also discovered a heightened risk of a birth defect known as omphalocele in women who took an SSRI during their first trimester.
Common SSRIs
SSRIs are a widely prescribed group of drugs that includes:
Paxil
Prozac
Zoloft
Celexa
Lexapro
Others
