Composix Hernia Patch Defects

Davol Inc.''s Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is a medical device implanted into a patient''s chest to help repair ventral hernias—small gaps or incisions on the surface of the abdomen that sometimes develop after a surgical procedure. In 2005, reports of Composix Kugel Mesh Patch defects surfaced, posing potentially life-threatening risks to the thousands of Americans who had been implanted with the device. According to various reports, the product, which consists of a “memory recoil ring” that opens once the patch has been inserted, can break and cause organ punctures and fistulas—abnormal passageways between intestinal organs.

Reports of Ring Breaks

In December 2005, the device maker issued a Composix Kugel Mesh Patch recall after it had learned of the serious product defects. Several months later, in March 2006, after 31 more ring breaks were reported—20 of which caused patient injury—the recall was expanded to include several additional products and lot numbers including the Bard large oval patches, the extra large oval patches, and the large circle patches.

Defect-Related Injuries

Sadly, the Composix Kugel Mesh Patch defects caused many patients to suffer severe injuries and even one reported death that was directly associated with a broken ring. Injuries included:

• Seven cases of intestinal perforations

• Severe pain in the abdominal wall

• Two cases of serious infections

• Once case in which the broken ring traveled to the vagina
