A cochlear implant offers partial hearing restoration to those with severe hearing loss and the completely deaf. Where a hearing aid amplifies sounds, a cochlear implant converts sound into signals that are relayed to the auditory nerve. While they may seem like a miracle to some, they are not without controversy or risk.
A cochlear implant takes sounds and converts them to corresponding electric currents, which are sent to the auditory center of the ear. These electric currents stimulate the nerves, sending a signal to the brain. The brain learns to interpret this signal and this process somewhat simulates natural hearing.
However, hearing through a cochlear implant is not the same as normal hearing. Patients who use these devices will still need to learn how to interpret the various signals and impulses created by the implants. Prospective implant recipients can undergo a hearing test for adults to determine if they are eligible.
Some members of the deaf community view these devices as a slap in the face. Deaf people against cochlear implants claim that hearing loss is not necessarily a handicap.
Even under the best circumstances, cochlear implantation is not without its risks. Problems during the procedure can lead to the puncturing of various membranes, nerve damage and infections. These can lead to:
Other problems can occur if the cochlear implant malfunctions after being implanted. Advanced Bionics, a leading maker of implants, is an example of a company with repeated dangerous defects in its cochlear implants. It has recently initiated its third recall of the HiRes 90K device.
In the past the implants have had a dangerous residual moisture in the circuitry. The cause of the defect in the 2010 recall have yet to determined, but the injuries they've caused are serious, including severe pain, overly loud sounds, and/or shocking sensations.
Have you or a loved one been injured after use of a recalled cochlear implant? If so, consult with a cochlear implant lawyer who will evaluate your claim, and help you seek compensation for the damages you suffered.
