A cochlear implant is an electronic device that can be used by those with severe hearing loss and the completely deaf to experience a type of hearing. Cochlear implants differ from hearing aids because they are not sound amplifiers, they are sound processors. However, the devices are somewhat controversial and cochlear implant injuries can occur.
Among the deaf community there is a controversy over the implants; many people in the deaf community view the devices as an affront to the deaf culture. Opponents claim that the deaf way of life is fully functional through the use of American Sign Language. They feel that cochlear implants are an example of the deaf minority being threatened by the hearing majority.
A cochlear implant detects sounds and converts them into electric currents. These electric currents stimulate the nerve, causing it to send a signal to the brain. The brain learns to interpret this signal and this process somewhat simulates natural hearing.
However, hearing through a cochlear implant is not the same as normal hearing. Patients who use these devices will still need to learn, or relearn, how to interpret the various signals created by cochlear implants.
The following is a list of some of the serious cochlear implant injuries
Advanced Bionics, a cochlear implant manufacturer, has recently initiated a recall of its HiRes 90K device, warning of possible dangerous defects. Advanced Bionics, and the HiRes 90k device, have a long history of defect recalls. In two past recalls the implants have had dangerous residual moisture in the circuitry. The nature of the latest defects leading to the recall have yet to determined they have cause cochlear implant t injuries, including severe pain, overly loud sounds and electric shocks.
Have you or a loved one suffered from cochlear implant injuries? If so, consult with a cochlear implant attorney who will evaluate your claim, and help you seek compensation for the damages you suffered.
