Cipro® tendon rupture cases have been steadily accumulating in the FDA's database. Of the 260+ tendon rupture cases reported to the FDA as of 2007, nearly one-quarter were linked to Cipro use. In fact, the first case of tendon rupture linked to Cipro was reported in 1987, the same year that Cipro was released to the U.S. market by its manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
Cipro: A Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic
Cipro (generic name, ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone, a bactericidal antibiotic used to fight infections. It's an effective medication, but the side effects of Cipro and other fluoroquinolones such as Levaquin, Noroxin and Floxin have resulted in both (1) stringent warnings on the packaging for these drugs and (2) fluoroquinolone lawsuits initiated by patients who've suffered injuries due to treatment with a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
