CIGNA (Connecticut General Life Insurance Company) is a leading global health insurance company based in Pennsylvania. Though the majority of its customers are in the United States, the company does offer benefit plans to expatriates as well.
CIGNA offers a variety of health insurance plans including medical, dental, vision, accident, pharmacy, behavioral care, life and disability. Whether purchased privately or through an employer, the insurance policy is designed to cover a specified percentage or set amount of a customer's health service bills, whether the service is an annual checkup or comprehensive treatment. Customers can choose from a variety of plans that offer varying amounts of coverage, from catastrophic coverage to full health insurance benefits.
Customers purchase health insurance in good faith that if they fall seriously ill or have an accident, their bills will be (mostly) covered. CIGNA has earned a poor reputation among some customers and health care professionals for refusing to cover the claims of patients. The company has consistently ranked low among commercial health insurance providers due to its lack of customer service, failure to honor claims and general bad faith practices.
The company gained national attention when it refused to honor the claim of a teenager in need of a liver transplant. CIGNA contended that the transplant was experimental, that it's not proven that the patient would survive and said that it reserved the right to refuse coverage for transplant service. Doctors gave the teenager a 65 percent chance of survival with the transplant. Though the company eventually agreed to honor the claim, the teenager died in the interim.
If you feel that CIGNA acted in bad faith, you should consult with a CIGNA attorney about possibly bringing a legal claim against the company. You may be eligible to recover compensation for your loss by filing a bad faith lawsuit against CIGNA.
Has CIGNA failed to fulfill its insurance obligations to you or a loved one? Do you believe you are a victim of bad faith? If so, contact our CIGNA bad faith attorneys for a consultation. We will evaluate your claim to determine if you have a legitimate case.
